Elder Paul E. Koelliker, of the Seventy and Elder Johathan C. Roberts, an Area Seventy spoke in conference today. I loved their talks! They spoke of how we need to invite none members to church, Stake Conference, General Conference, have the Missionaries over for dinner and invite your none members to eat over as well, and give the Book of Mormon with your testimony written in the front cover to them. It never hurts to invite people to church with us, the worst thing that can happen is for them to say no.
When they were talking about none members I had a feeling that I needed to write what they were saying down in my church journal that I bring to church with me every Sunday just in case I hear something that really touches me. As I was writing down what they were saying I kept writing even when they were done. This happens a lot when I'm in church and I'm writing down what they speaker is saying then my hand just keeps writing even when they are done talking about that subject. My mind just starts thinking up more things that I need to write on the subject of what the speaker is saying, my mind or the spirit?
For instants about the none members and inviting them to things I kept writing and wrote.., People aren't just placed in our lives at random, we met them for a reason! We might not know the reason at the time or we might never know. We might learn something from them, they might learn something from us, but meeting people isn't random. I have had teachers in school and in church, coaches, friends, friends parents, and family members teach me something that they might not even know that they said something that has stuck with me to this day. When you have a feeling to do something or say something don't second guess your self, just do it!
I know that I have had opportunity's to invite none members to church when I played volleyball at the University of Utah. And looking back I wish that I invited those none members to church with me on Sunday, to come over to family dinner at my parents house and I wish that I gave them a Book of Mormon with my testimony in it. I am still friends with these none members to this day so I know that I still can do this! So I get a second chance, but we don't always get second chances!
I know that the spirit was having me write this down in church today! Living in Vegas I meet a lot of none members, especially being a substitute teacher and coach. I know that these kids are looking at me as a role model. I know that I can't just all a sudden brake out in a church song or start preaching the gospel in school about the church, but by being a good example they might feel the spirit.
They also were talking about how important it is for us to teach our kids how to pray at a young age and to teach them that they are a child of God! One of the Elders went on a couples mission with his wife to Africa. They pulled up to a bridge and had to wait for clearance. While waiting the African people started to surround their car, and were yelling out in their language, "white man." A little girl pressed her nose up against his window and the Elder put us finger on the glass right where her nose was. She started to laugh and he rolled down the window a little and could hear them speaking in their language. He looked at the little girl and said I.. She said I.. he noticed that she was trying to copy everything he was saying. So he started again, I, (I) Am, (Am) and so on till he said, "I am a child of God." The girl kept repeating it over and over!
He went on with his talk telling us that if we don't teach our children the Gospel, who will?
It is so true! I know we all want best for our children, but if we don't take the time out of our busy lives and just sit down and teach them, how are they going to learn what we want from them if we don't teach them?
He went on about how we need to have family time. Family home evening, Scripture reading, family dinner, family prayer, etc.. We need to be the example in our family so they have someone to follow and look up to. I hope that once I start having kids that I will have the discipline to teach my children how important prayer is and that they are a child of God!
